Our Vineyard

Puriri Hills makes luxurious blended red wines inspired by the grand crus of Pomerol and St Emilion, on the right bank of Bordeaux, France.

The vineyard is set in green rolling hills southeast of Auckland, New Zealand, just outside of the village of Clevedon. From the main road, a long driveway climbs past vineyards which produced their first handmade, blended red wine in 1999. Grown and produced entirely on the property, the wines are gaining recognition as serious contenders to the best right bank Bordeaux.

The scenery is spectacular. From the house you look north across the islands of the Hauraki Gulf to the craggy hills of the Coromandel Peninsula . To the east lie the Wairoa River Valley and the Hunua Ranges. It is a wonderful destination for travellers and wine lovers alike.

Puriri Hills takes its name from the native Puriri trees growing on the 93 acre property. There are private walks through the vineyards, farmland and native bush from which this uniquely wild, yet gentle, countryside can be appreciated.

Soil, Climate & Production

The Puriri Hills Clevedon site has a micro-climate and soil profile similar to that of nearby Waiheke Island, which already has a reputation for producing excellent red wines.

The vines are hand tended and hand picked. Sustainable viticultural practices are followed as closely as possible. The wine is fermented in open topped fermenters, hand plunged and aged in 60-80% new French oak barrels. The wines are barrel aged for 18-22 months and further bottle aged for at least six months before release.

Timeline of Milestones & Vintages at Puriri Hills…

We are dry land farmers and embrace the practices of natural farming, managing our vineyard with organic or biodynamic soil additions and manual canopy and understory work. Our handpicked fruit is entirely grown, vinified, aged and bottled on the estate.
